ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder & ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder.
What exactly does that mean? The best way to explain this is by looking at the individual definitions for each of the words in the definition (all definitions are taken from the Encarta World English Dictionary®): - attention: concentration: mental focus, serious consideration or concentration.
- deficit: shortfall: the amount by which a total is less than it should be.
- hyperactive: unusually active, restless and lacking the ability to concentrate for any length of time.
- disorder: illness: a medical condition involving a disturbance to the usual functioning of the mind or body.
Although the doctors and school administrators are quick to put children on drugs to handle the above, we want to present you with all the facts, the various physical issues that cause the above symptoms and the tried and true common sense solutions that are proving remarkably workable. Before you automatically go "that's my child!", I want you to take a good look - what is his attention span like when he is doing something he wants to do vs. something he doesn't want to do. Does your child have an "attention deficit" or is he being made to do something he doesn't want to do, has no interest in doing or is something he doesn't feel is worthy of his attention? Knowing your child better than anybody else, now what exactly is the issue here? And what information do you need to evaluate the real situation your child is experiencing and what is the most effective handling. Don't let your child get labeled as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or grouped in as one of the many ADHD Children. Find out the source and get it handled without drugs permanently.
